"A friend and I have been talking about this sort of thing recently (you know who you are, hello!)" Oh hey!! It's me!! Hello!!!! :D
Oh man, oh man. I am with you all the way here. It's so heartbreaking and frustrating that you want to share your hard work but you know deep down that the online world is just so shit for it right now. It frustrates me to no end. Like you, I have also tried different social media. Instagram really is terrible, good lord. I only had it briefly to commission an artist and it absolutely baffles me how anyone can gain any traction there. Those reels are abysmal. I think I lost brain cells watching some of them.
The more time I spend on social media (especially places like Tumblr and Reddit), the more it becomes apparent to me that people have become entitled and demanding. Just this week I saw someone whine about how artists portray a character in their art work (they didn't like how artists made this character look like "a twink" and that artists should stop doing it).
I've seen countless people bitch about us x reader writers for writing the reader in ways that don't match a person's personality completely.
"I wouldn't say that!" "I wouldn't do that!" No shit, Sherlock. I don't know you.
People have become insanely entitled now and look to social media and the internet as a whole for content to consume. They don't seek to engage with the community. They don't seek to support artists and writers.
Hell, some of them bitch and cry when they have to make an AO3 account to read fanfiction. I take great pleasure in keeping my fics locked so that only registered users can read.
Like you, I never wanted to be popular. I just wanted to be SEEN and HEARD and UNDERSTOOD. My fics mean so much to me and your art means so much to you; of course, we want others to notice what is important to us!
Anyways, I don't know where I was going with this. Just know I am with you all the way and I share the same grievances.
